Wawel as a barracks

ListenCurator · 0:14 · AI voice

From 1846 Wawel Castle was once again occupied by the Austrian army, which kept a barracks there. In 1868 Wincenty Pol proposed in the daily “Czas” that the castle be restored to its former splendour and turned into a museum. The army left the castle in 1905.

Narration text

This isn't yet the Wawel you know from the guidebooks. Austrian troops are stationed in the castle, and the great halls were divided up with partition walls long ago. Krieger photographs it at about the time Wincenty Pol writes that there should be a museum here.
